Central Portugal

Central Portugal is a region of diverse landscapes and historical wealth, connecting the north and south of Portugal with a tapestry of cultural and natural wonders. The area is home to the Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain range in continental Portugal, renowned for its picturesque scenery and ski resorts. Central Portugal is also the location of the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest in Europe, whose historic buildings were classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, symbolising the region's deep academic and cultural significance. The region's rich history is displayed in the Roman ruins of Conímbriga and the medieval town of Óbidos, where cobbled streets lead to quaint shops and traditional restaurants. The coastal part of Central Portugal, like Aveiro, often called the 'Venice of Portugal' due to its scenic canals and colourful moliceiros boats, offers a unique contrast to the mountainous interior. The region's gastronomy reflects its geographical diversity, featuring seafood from the coast and cheeses and meats from the highlands. Central Portugal is a fusion of old and new, where ancient scholars’ footsteps echo in the universities, and modern surfers challenge the Atlantic waves.
